Description

I’ve had this horsetail plant for a few years now — it’s one of those old-school, tough perennials that just keeps growing. It’s got that classic upright, jointed look with black bands on the stems, and it stays green all year. I got it in a 20L pot, which is about 35cm tall and 27cm wide — the whole thing is around 175cm when standing up. It’s not super flashy, but it’s sturdy and thrives in poor soils, even in clay or sandy ground.

It’s a bit of a “living fossil” — the horsetail family is one of the oldest plant lineages, and this species (Equisetum hyemale) is native to the UK and Ireland. I’ve grown it in full sun, though it can handle partial shade too. It doesn’t need much fuss — just a bit of moisture and good drainage.

I’ve kept it in my garden at Chathill, Bamburgh Court, and it’s been doing really well. It’s about 1.5–2.5 metres tall when it’s fully grown, which takes 2–5 years, and spreads out to about 0.5–1 metre wide. It’s hardy down to -20°C, so it’ll survive winters here.

I’m not selling it for much — it’s just something I’ve grown over time and don’t really need anymore. I’m keeping it in the garden, but it’s been sitting in the pot for a while and I thought I’d part with it. If you’re into plants that grow on their own and don’t need much attention, this one’s a solid pick.

Price is £126 if you’re interested — just a small price for a plant that’s been standing strong for years.
