1979 VW Type 2 Bay Window Devon Moonraker 1.6L
Description
This 1979 VW Type 2 bay window van — a Devon Moonraker in the original 1.6L — has been in my family for 21 years. I’ve had it since I was a kid, and it’s always been a bit of a pride project. It wasn’t just sitting around — I restored it fairly recently after buying it, kept the original paint and interior, and gave it a proper overhaul. The engine’s been swapped out for a new one (7,670 miles on it), and it’s been fully tuned with a rolling road check. All the major bits have been replaced: gearbox, clutch, carburettor, starter motor, fuel pump, tappets, and the gear selector bushes. I also did a full smoke test and replaced the fuel tank rubber seal and main earth lead. The belly pans were both removed from both sides — under and sides — and replaced. There’s a fire suppression system now, and a Thatcham Cat 1 alarm with immobiliser (covers the engine bay too).
It comes with the original water carrier, waste water caddy, and a full weather cover. I’ve also kept the original awning — it’s stand-alone, so it’s easy to set up. Photos show a couple of rust spots, but nothing that’s serious — just a few areas that’ll need a bit of care over time.
The driver’s side gear stick was replaced recently — it’s smooth now, and the van drives like a dream. I’ve got loads of service records, from when I first got it, right through to now — full history of maintenance, improvements, and fixes.
I’ve never really thought about selling it — it’s been part of my life for decades. But now, with things changing, I’m finally ready to hand it over. It’s been valued at £23,000 by the insurer, and I’m only taking payments via local bank transfer at the branch.
It’s in cheddar, Somerset — just a few miles from the village — and I’m happy to chat if you’re interested. This van is not just a car — it’s a piece of family history. If you’ve ever driven a VW and felt like you were part of something real, this might be for you.
