Description

This is a real deal 1962/63 Hofner 500/3 bass — one of the last ones made before they switched over to the Senator model in 1964. It’s not one of those flashy, heavily marketed instruments; Hofner didn’t really push these early versions in Europe, which is why they’re a bit of a hidden gem. The original 500/3s had a 2½” body depth, 21 frets, and a chunky rectangular console — this one’s a bit different though. It’s got the narrower 2” body, 22 frets, and those rotary tone and volume controls that became standard on later models.

I’ve had it through a proper refurb, so it’s not just sitting there dusty. The headstock has been completely redone — matt black with a gold Hofner decal, looks solid now. The pots have been swapped out for modern CTS ones, tuners, nut, and bridge have all been replaced with new Hofner parts. It’s missing its scratch plate, but the rest of the bass is original, including the staple pickup — I rewound that myself. The neck’s been set up with flatwound strings, and it’s in great shape for a 63+ year-old instrument. There are just a few small marks, nothing major — you can see them in the last few photos.

It comes with a modern Hofner case, which is nice and solid. I’ve kept the original body and hardware where possible, just updated what needed replacing. The price is £805.50 — not a lot for something this rare and solid. I’m based in Sturminster Newton, Dorset, so if you're local, just pop by — I’ll give you a quick look and show you the details. Otherwise, I can ship it to anywhere in the UK with fully insured 24-hour courier for £35. US/Canada via UPS is £185, EU is £65. Outside those regions, I’ll need to get in touch with Vintage Rare & Retro Guitars for shipping — just let me know.
