THREE ANTIQUE FRENCH STONEWARE CONFIT POTS AND SALTING JARS – 1900s – HAND-THROWN
Description
I’ve got these three antique French stoneware confit pots and salting jars – they’re from a brocante in Pougy, Champagne, and have been in my kitchen for years as a display piece. I picked them up back when I was doing some farmhouse-style cooking projects, and they’ve stayed right where they were ever since. They’re hand-thrown, early 1900s, with a slightly irregular, rustic look – bumps, dents, a bit of wear, and the usual glaze crazing you’d expect from old stoneware. The largest two are fairly close in shape, the smallest has a slightly different handle and a glazed lid, but they’re still a good set overall.
I’ve used them for confit (duck in duck fat), but now they’re just as at home as storage jars, planters, or even just as quirky kitchen accents. They’re not perfect – there are chips, a few scratches, and a hairline crack inside the smallest one (it’s sound, doesn’t show on the outside), and the middle jar has a bit of interior crazing. The lids fit loosely, which is normal for this type of piece.
The handles are still there, chipped and worn but solid – quite rare for something this old. The inside is glazed and stained, the outside has a soft, lived-in patina. I can’t find a maker’s mark, though there’s a number 4 on the lid of the middle jar.
Measurements: about 23cm, 20cm, and 17cm tall with lids on. Handle-to-handle: 21cm, 20cm, 17cm. Diameters: 18cm, 16cm, 15cm. Total weight: around 5.4kg.
They’re not in top condition by modern standards – they’ve been used and aged – but they’re solid, sound, and still functional. I’ve kept them in a cupboard for years, just sitting there, and I’ve finally run out of space.
I can post them for £7.99 if you pay via bank transfer (no PayPal, no card, no courier – only cash on collection or bank transfer). I’m based in Penryn, Cornwall, and happy to arrange a pickup or delivery if you're local or willing to work it out.
If you're into vintage kitchen stuff, or just like the charm of old French cookware, these might be a bit of a keeper for you. Just take a look at the photos – there’s a lot of detail in the wear and the glaze.
No price in the title – just the facts. And I’m not selling them to get rich – I’m just letting go of something I’ve loved for years.
