1980 Gibson Les Paul Standard Tobacco Sunburst
Description
I’ve had this 1980 Gibson Les Paul Standard for years — it’s one of those guitars that just feels right in your hands. It’s from the Norlin era, which means it’s got that classic, soulful vibe that vintage Les Pauls are known for. The original Tim Shaw humbuckers are still in place, and honestly, they’re some of the most loved pickups in guitar history — rich, clear, and full of character. It’s all original electronics, no swaps, just sitting there doing its thing. The finish has that deep, warm tobacco sunburst look — a bit worn, but not in a bad way. The body has a natural patina, and the neck shows real play wear, which makes it feel lived-in and comfortable. The medium C shape neck is super smooth and fast — I’ve been playing it every day for years and never had any issues.
Frets are original, low-profile, and still plenty responsive. I’ve upgraded the tuners to Schaller tulip ones for better stability — not a flashy mod, just something that keeps it in tune over time. The guitar weighs 4.55kg, which is solid and gives it that classic Les Paul heft.
It comes with a recent hard case — not new, but it’s been kept well and is in near-new condition. There’s a bit of wear on the neck, some small dings around the back, and a little tarnish on the chrome — all signs of real use, not abuse. It’s been played a lot, but never pushed to the limit.
I picked it up when I was looking for a guitar that could handle everything from solid rock to blues and jazz. It’s got that deep, warm tone and resonance that just… works. I’ve never looked back.
It’s sitting in my garage in Kyle, East Ayrshire, and I’m selling it because I’m moving to a new place and want to downsize. It’s not just a guitar — it’s a piece of music history that’s been part of my life for decades. If you’ve ever wanted to own a real, playable vintage Les Paul with original Shaw pickups, this one’s been sitting in the back of my closet for years and is finally getting a chance to go to someone who’ll appreciate it.
Price is £2,335.50 — I’ll keep it fair and not overcharge, but it’s a solid value for what it is.
