Renault Trafic Campervan
Description
So I’m moving back to New Zealand next year and decided to part with this old mate of mine — a 2004 Renault Traf or Trafic LWB — that’s been through a proper, thoughtful conversion. It’s not flashy, but it’s solid, reliable, and actually kind of comfy when you’re just trying to get from A to B or spend a weekend in a quiet village. It’s been loved by a local mechanic for years — well looked after, not flashy, just practical. I’ve driven it across Europe loads of times — from France to the Alps, through Germany, bits of Italy — and it’s never had a problem. No smoke, no rattles, just smooth and quiet.
The engine’s a 2.5L turbo diesel — still strong, still healthy. Got a new gearbox, clutch, and dual mass flywheel in late 2024 after catching a worn bearing early. All receipts are in — it’s not just a patch job, it’s a proper upgrade to keep it running long-term.
Mileage is about 150k — will go up a bit, but not much. On the motorway, I’m averaging around 45mpg — so 700 miles on one tank. It’s been remapped too — a bit more power, better fuel economy, no extra noise.
Inside, it’s been built solid. Sound deadened everywhere — floor, walls, ceiling — Dodomat stuff. The sofa-to-bed is 2m x 1.2m — sleeps two easily, and it’s super quick to convert. Clean, warm, not too much clutter. Good storage all over — drawers, under the seats, under the bed.
It runs off-grid too — brand new 230Ah AGM battery, split charge relay so it charges while driving. The fridge’s a 22L Alpicool — quiet, low draw, runs for over a week without power. 4 LED ceiling lights, USB ports scattered around. The 8kW diesel heater’s new (used a couple times in Feb 2025) — great for winter or after a surf. It’s hooked up to the main fuel tank, so no extra hassle.
It’s got a gas burner, pots, pans, three 10-litre water tanks (you can add a sink if you want). Two camp chairs and a table. Plenty of space for solar if you’re into that. Tow ball’s in, fits in all standard parking spots — under 2m, so no issues in tight streets.
The cab’s clean, the bodywork is solid, and it drives like a car — good position, comfortable, not fussy. I’ve parked in city centres in places like Lyon, Munich, and even a few quiet spots in Spain — no issues at all. Black out blinds on the back, black curtain in the cab — keeps it quiet and private.
I’ve kept it well-maintained, all MOTs are good, next one valid until August 2026. It’s been a real workhorse — not a luxury van, not flashy, just reliable and ready to go.
I’m not selling it for a set price — open to offers. Just wanted to share it with someone who might actually use it. If you’re into quiet drives, off-grid living, or just want a solid van to take on the road — this one’s been through the wringer and still runs fine.
It’s in Kirkburton, Highburton — easy to see if you’re passing through. I’ll be gone by June, so no long-term storage.
(If you’re curious, I’ve got a link to photos showing the build stages — just a quick scroll through the album, shows how it came together step by step.)
