1988 Jeep Wrangler YJ 4.2 Auto Soft Top RHD
Description
So, I’ve been keeping this old Wrangler in the garage for over 17 years — mostly because it’s just too much fun to drive when the snow starts falling, and not much to do with it otherwise. It’s a real 1988 E Reg RHD YJ, 4.2 litre petrol, automatic, soft top, and it’s still running — engine, gearbox, 4x4, all working fine.It came in from Howes Motors in Bedfordshire, imported new to the UK, and first registered on 1st August 1989. The V5c is in my name and it’s on SORN — no issues there. Original black factory paint with Wrangler decals, no body lifts, no winch, no snorkel, no mods at all. Just a clean, original build — factory half steel doors, column shift auto, fold-down windscreen, spare wheel mount on the rear, and all the classic bits: side fender flares, sill flares, flip-down plate, internal roll cage, jack and brace under the bonnet, PAS, tow bar, electrics, all standard.
I’ve done a bit of work on it over the years — replaced the engine control module, mechanical fuel pump, alternator, and the Webber Redline carburettor (got it from the USA, not cheap). New exhaust, new rectangular headlights, new soft top with removable dark side and rear flexible windows, new door tops with plastic windows. The wheels are genuine 15” Jeep alloys, stripped and powder coated a few years back — still look solid.
The seats, carpets, and rear seat belts are all off, but the rear body tub light grey fabric cover and a light grey ‘bikini roof’ match the soft top. Steering wheel has the multi-bolt fixings, and the dash is original with all instruments. No welding or paintwork since it left the factory — just a few marks from age, nothing serious.
It’s been MOT’d in April 2017 — mileage was 69,035, now it’s 69,043. No current MOT, so it’ll need recommissioning before road use, but I don’t expect any major issues. It’s a solid, reliable machine — just needs a bit of love and a bit of time.
I’m not selling it because I’m desperate or out of storage — it’s just sitting in a garage, and I’ve had a few good runs in it over the years, especially in the winter. If you're into classic Jeeps and want something original, unmodified, and ready to go — this one’s a real gem.
If you’re serious about restoring it or just want parts, I’m happy to show it — no fakes, no pressure. I’m based in Ripley, Amber Valley, so no long drives needed.
I’m not going to take lowball offers or “cash and pick up today” — I don’t do that. If you’re genuinely interested, get in touch. I’m available from 9am to 8pm — email or phone, no texts.
And yes — free delivery for 60 miles. Beyond that, it’s £1.50 per mile.
Also, I’ve got a few other classic Mini bits in the back — a Q Reg Autobarn Gecko kit car, a 1993 K Reg Mini, a few restoration projects, and some rare parts. But if you’re after this Wrangler, that’s the main one.
Just a quick note — do your own research on common issues with 1980s Jeeps. I can’t go into what might go wrong — that’s up to you. The best thing is to see it for yourself.
If you’re serious, get in touch. I’ll arrange a view.
And no — the photos don’t include any other vehicles. Everything shown is just the Wrangler.
P.S. The price is £4,495.50 — I’m not going to take less, and I’m not selling it just to fill a gap. Prices for these classics are only going up.
