Description

This is a booklet I found in a box at home, tucked away from the old church archive. It’s a collection of letters edited by Michael Austin, from the time of the Great War — men from the parish writing to the vicar about their experiences. Some of the letters are heartfelt, others are just quiet, everyday moments. There are a few illustrations and short biographical notes too. The dedication says “To John With warmest thanks” — I think that’s the author, though I’m not 100% sure. It’s a 150-page book, first published in 1999. I picked it up years ago when I was doing some local history research and never thought I’d actually keep it. It’s not something I’d share widely — it’s more of a personal piece. I’ve only ever shown it to a few people, and I don’t know if it’s still in circulation. It’s in good condition, just a bit faded. I’m not sure how many copies exist — probably not many. It’s for collectors only, really. I’m holding it in Killin, Stirling, so if you’re local, I’d be happy to pass it on in person. I’ll only do cash on collection — no online payments. The price is £4.50, but that’s just a note — I’m not asking for much. Just a quiet moment with something that feels like it came out of a bygone era.
