A Scanner Darkly DVD

Got this DVD from my collection in Elgin, Moray — the disc has a few light scratches but plays fine. It’s Richard Linklater’s take on Philip K. Dick’s wild, confusing novel, and it’s one of those films that really makes you question reality. The same rotoscoping style he used in Waking Life gives it that dreamy, glitchy feel, and the story follows Bob Arctor (Keanu Reeves) as an undercover cop getting deep into a drug epidemic called substance D. As he starts using the drug to stay on the radar, his mind starts falling apart — and by the end, he can’t tell what’s real anymore. There’s a great mix of humor, tension, and unease, and it’s not easy to follow, but in a good way. The cast is solid — Woody Harrelson as the intense Luckman, Rory Cochrane as the paranoid Freck, and Winona Ryder as Donna. The case might be a bit scuffed, but the discs themselves are in good shape. I’ve got a few other DVDs if you’re interested — happy to talk about bundling if you’re thinking of buying more.
