Spiral Sussex Day Centre for Adults with Learning Disabilities
Description
I’ve been looking after this place for a while now — Spiral Sussex — and I’m finally letting it go. It’s been running since 2000, started in Brighton but now based in Ash-Aldershot. We were originally set up to give adults with learning disabilities a real chance to get out and enjoy life, something that wasn’t easy to find back then. Most support was either in care homes or family settings, and people rarely got to join in with community life. Now, we’ve got a whole range of stuff going on — arts and crafts, drama, film-making, cinema nights, band practice, even a radio show. There’s also day trips, holidays, and after-hours clubs. The space is actually full of creative energy — people come in, make things, learn new skills, and just get to feel like they belong.
I’ve been involved in running it for years, and it’s been one of the more meaningful things I’ve done. It’s not a fancy facility — it’s just a place where people can grow, have fun, and actually take part in the world around them.
If you ever find yourself in Ash-Aldershot and want to check it out, I can point you in the right direction. It’s not expensive to visit — just a small fee, around £9 — and it’s always been about giving people a real say in their day.
I’m not selling it like a commercial thing. I’m just passing it on because it’s been such a good fit for so many people over the years.
